During periods of partial closure of schools (i.e. only opening for vulnerable pupils or children of key workers) many pupils do not progress at the expected rate and therefore significant gaps in skills and knowledge need to be addressed as a priority. It is therefore essential that the curriculum provided for remote learning focuses on the core skills which are fundamental to progress. The focus of the curriculum must be on daily sessions of phonics, reading, writing, and maths learning. The maths curriculum has been reduced to focus on core skills and understanding (as described by the Ready to Progress criteria contained in ‘Mathematics guidance: key stages 1 and 2’ (DfE, June 2020).
Our aim is to continue, where possible, the curriculum content so that on their return, pupils have maintained the curriculum coverage, and all pupils remain on schedule to cover the key concepts.
In response to partial closures, we have developed a remote learning policy to inform our practice and to provide guidance for parents/carers. We have also created some information guides and helpful tips.
